Cathy Binger

Cathy BingerCathy Binger leads the AAC lab team at the University of New Mexico. She is an associate professor of speech-language pathology in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at UNM. Cathy earned her Ph.D. in 2004 from Penn State University under the mentorship of Dr. Janice Light.

Although Cathy certainly enjoys her teaching duties, the best part of her job is doing research. She still can't believe that someone actually pays her to create her own projects! Plus she gets to work with great families and kids...and let's not forget all those fruitful hours in the lab spent with her terrific students not only working but also laughing and consuming an inordinate number of Trader Joe's cookies.

Cathy's research efforts, as well as those of her research partner, Jennifer Kent-Walsh, focus on improving communication outcomes for young children who use AAC. No child's social or educational opportunities should be limited in any way due to limitations with speech, and all children deserve the chance to reach their full communicative potential.
